GRIPS is the best-known contemporary and political theatre for children and young people in Germany.

GRIPS Theater

Under the artistic direction of Natalie Driemeyer, Thomas Keller, and Winfried Tobias, and managed by Jutta Brinkschulte and Winfried Tobias, the GRIPS Theater is a welcoming venue for people of all ages. It is an inspiring, locally and internationally connected venue for children’s and youth theater, rooted in the tradition of realistic, emancipatory contemporary theater. Through its performances and its work, it advocates for the fundamental rights of children and young people.

 

About us

History

GRIPS Theater is a child of the student movement and cabaret. And just so that the place would not be empty in the afternoon, our manager invented a “Theatre for children in the Reichskabarett”. But there was still a long way to go before the approach prevailed.

The history of GRIPS is the basis of two documentary films. In addition, on 28 April 2019, the GRIPS archive was taken over by the Academy of Arts in an official ceremony.

The GRIPS Foundation was established on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of GRIPS Theater. It serves as the cornerstone not only to look back, but also to look 50 years into the future.
